Half day/day trip

Discover Gambia

Explore our day trips

A relaxing sun holiday by the pool, but also a bit of a trip… A market, sightseeing, birding: together with you we design your trip. Daily schedule:
– after breakfast at the hotel we pick you up, usually around 07:30. Drinks in the car, with a day trip lunch is included in the price, as are all activities.

– short trip to our destination, with a possible introduction to rural Gambia.
– shortly after noon (half-day trip), or in the evening (day trip) we bring you back to your hotel.

For birding in the coastal area there are five day trips to discover the different areas (coast, forest, plains) and their unique birds. Possible as a half day or day trip.

Tanji Fishing Village / Brufut Forest

Just twenty minutes from the Senegambia resort area, Tanji is Gambia’s busiest fishing harbor. You’ll witness the boats landing, the catch being unloaded and processed, and the colorful fish market where much of the fresh fish is shipped straight to Senegal. After lunch, we explore Brufut Forest—peering through the hide for rare woodland birds and strolling along shady trails.

Kartong & Southern Gambia

In about an hour’s drive you leave the resort strip behind and pass through picturesque villages full of schoolchildren on their way to class. Near Kartong, a sandy path leads us to the Atlantic shore for a short bird-watching walk and a refreshing beach drink. After lunch we board a boat on the Alahin River—the natural border with Senegal—and cruise through mangroves or out toward the ocean, spotting crocodiles, mongooses, fish-eagles, countless seabirds and, notably, the world’s largest heron: the Goliath.

Farasutu / Pirang

A favorite among birders, this tour can be taken as a half-day or full-day. At Pirang Forest we visit a newly installed hide that brings unique canopy species into close view. After a picnic among the birdlife, we continue to Farasutu, where two hides and a guided walk with a local expert often reveal owls and other forest surprises.

Kunta Kinteh Slave Island

Gambia’s dark chapter in the slave trade comes to life on this deeply moving journey. We depart around 6:00 AM for Banjul, board the ferry to Barra, then drive to the island where enslaved Africans were held before being shipped to the Americas. A local guide leads you through the museum, and you enjoy lunch on the island before retracing your route back to your hotel.

Fathala Wildlife Reserve, Senegal

If you’ve already experienced an East African safari, you may find this different—but for a first safari, it’s ideal. You’ll see zebras, antelopes, giraffes, monkeys and even a rhino. We start early, take the Banjul-Barra ferry, cross the Senegal border, then arrive at Fathala for a guided game drive. An optional “lion walk” is offered, though we do not recommend it on ethical grounds—your choice.

Home Cooking with a Gambian Family

Spend a day immersed in Gambian life: shop at a local market, cook over a wood or charcoal fire, and dine on authentic dishes. You’ll taste domoda (a peanut stew with meat, fish or chicken) and benachin (tomato-and-onion rice with fish or meat), or perhaps grilled barracuda, prawns and oysters seasoned with local spices and served with rice. As the afternoon ends, we’ll return you—richer for the experience—to your hotel.
